To the D&S Service Department,
I just wanted to let you know that your new Emergency Call Service for travelers is Great!!! I was on a ride with eight more friends from the Sacramento, Ca., area when one of our group had his motorcycle break down at Crater Lake.
Well, as any of you know, breaking down away from home is stressful enough but breaking down on top of a mountain miles from anywhere really gets the blood pumping! We had no idea what was causing the problem with the bike but we knew he wasn't going any further without help. That is when our friend, Tony, called your hotline and received immediate words of encouragement. You guys would be at the shop to check his bike out whenever we were able to get it towed down to Phoenix.
Tony had already made arrangements for a tow to your shop, but being a Monday, your shop was closed. Luckily for us, your new emergency call number was available and after making it to your shop, the bike was repaired and Tony was able to join the rest of us the next day.
Problem with the bike was a bad stator. Thanks again for jumping in and helping us travelers out. We are now on our way to Gold Beach for a ride in the jet boats ad then back down the California coast to our home.
I rode an Electra Glide for several years but I am riding a Honda Goldwing at the moment. Service like this makes me give thought to picking up another Harley!
Thanks Again
Ron Johnson, Blue Knights CA-1

D&S Circa 1982

Editor's Note: A couple of weeks ago, we got reacquianted with a traveler who had passed through the dealership 28 years ago. He now lives in West Sacramento, Calif., and is a member of the River City Harley Riders. He sent us this photo from his original trip in 1982. This photo is of our second location (4526 S. Pacific Highway, just south of the town of Phoenix) and it shows the old, barrel-topped mattress factory building we moved into in the early '70s. That building eventually quadrupled in size, and had a complete remodel before we moved to our new location in 2000. The old Harley-Davidson sign you see in the upper right hand corner still hangs ini our bike warehouse.
Here is the note Russell sent with his photo:
Howdy Josh & You All,
Here are a couple of actual glossy prints .... Dave Hardy is standing next to his 1950 Panhead, Carl Harris is sitting on his 1978 Shovenhead and my 1965 Panhead is sitting next to their bikes. All are in rigid frames, black, red flames. The occasion was a 5-day ride from San Jose to McCloud to Alturas to Ashland to Grants Pass to Crescent City to down the coast back to San Jose. Remember that ride and many others like it was yesterday.
Thanks again for the hospitality and enjoy the pictures.

Are you the Lone Rider?
from Lin Tomy
07.29.09
On July 11, 2009, I was passing through your city on my way home from a 10 day trip into Washington and Oregon when the engine on my motorcycle started billowing out smoke and flames from the tail pipes. This was a very frightening situation for me as I am a newer rider of only four years and my travelling companion, a dear friend, was also female. Not knowing where things were in your city or what to do, an angel came along from behind me in the form of a lone rider on a Harley, who quickly motioned for me to follow him. My friend asked, “Where are you going?” I told her I didn’t know but that my brother had always taught me “bikers take care of bikers” so I was going to follow him. She agreed and off we went.
Well, I never realized how true that statement was until July 7th. That lone rider took us to D & S Harley-Davidson on S. Pacific Highway. When we pulled in, right before closing time, the men inside came running out to see if they could help. They immediately started looking at my bike trying to see what the problem was. The finally ascertained that it was bad, really bad, and when they realized that I was riding a Kawasaki, they called the Kawasaki dealer to see if they could help. Unfortunately, they were unable to. So the staff at D & S pulled out the phone book and started looking for a U-Haul rental place for us.
We were able to connect with the owners of Medford Autocare on Crater Lake Hwy. They returned to the shop on their Harley, as they had already gone home for the day, to rent a truck to me to cart my broken down bike home. One of the men, John, from D & S, drove me, on his own time, over to Medford Autocare. Another one, Bone, gave my friend his phone number to call when I was on my way back with the truck. Bone returned to D & S to help us load the bike and strap it down with the straps that D & S had given us. The owner, Terrie, gave us food to take with us. They packed us up and sent us on our way for the last leg of our journey.

When all was said and done, the lone rider had disappeared without leaving a name or way for me to contact him to send a thank you note. I am hoping you will print this letter, and that he will see it, so that he will know what a valuable piece to this whole puzzle he was. Without his help, we could have been stranded for several days in Medford, unable to return home on our time table. In fact, without all of the help that we received, that would have been the case.
So please give my heart felt thank you to that lone rider, and all of the folks at D & S Harley and Medford Autocare. I can only hope that some day I will be able to “pay it forward” by helping someone else in need as much as they all helped me.
Sincerely,
Lin Tomy
Antioch, CA
PS: Just to let you know the outcome…. A piston hit a spark plug causing the engine to blow. I will be selling the bike as a parts bike and have since bought a new one (and upgraded to a bigger bike). A happy ending all the way around. :)
Tale of an Oil Leak
from Sandy Ward
07.28.09
I just wanted to tell you about the experience I had at your dealership.
I was on my way to Seattle, Wash., when I acquired an oil leak. Well, your dealership was the first one I came upon so I stopped. I went into the Service Department and was greeted by Mark (Adams, Service Manager). I told him my problem and he offered to try to help me. First he came outside and took a look at my bike and explained to me what he thought the problem might be. His first solution was that it would take at least a couple of hours to fix if the mechanic had the time and the part needed. So, I said if that wasn't possible that I would need to buy a quart of oil and get on my way, but Mark said "first let me check with the mechanic to see if he would have the time to at least take a look at my bike.
He thenwent to talk to John (Watson) who then took my bike and proceeded to look into my problem. After about an hour John and Mark came and told me what they thought the problem was and that I should be able to go on with my trip without any issues regarding the oil leak.
John was more than helpful telling me how to resolve my oil leak and even talked to my husband on the phone to tell him what he had just told me.
I can't tell you enough how much I really appreciated the help Mark and John gave me and how friendly and accommodating they both were.
I will tell all my friends that if they are ever in the area that they really need to stop into D&S Harley-Davidson because they won't believe the service they will receive.
I wanted you to know that the guys you have working for you are the greatest and that their customer service was above and beyond.
Sincerely, Sandy Ward
Sacramento, Calif.
Love Hurts
from Ralph Ford

I'm about to share a secret with you that only our closest friends know. You look like the trustworthy type though, so I think I can trust you not to let this get around. For the past couple of years my wife and I have been involved in a torrid three way relationship with a beautiful red head. I think the French have a word for this kind of thing, but I can't think of what it's called at the moment. Back to our red head though, she's hot, sexy, athletic, and she's a bit of a rude thing, but she always carries herself with style and grace. She draws a crowd wherever she goes, and we're proud to be seen with her.
When my wife and I started this affair we agreed that we would spend our time with our red headed friend together. I have to admit though, that I have enjoyed the company of our special friend when my wife wasn't there. I'm not sure if my wife knows about all of my secret rendezvous with her, but I think she might. I feel a little guilty about that, but I can't stop myself -I have to admit that it will probably happen again in the future.
Lately though there has been a dark cloud over our happiness. Our beautiful friend was diagnosed with a serious illness. Fortunately we caught it in time, but her health coverage had just lapsed. We battled with the guarantor for months, and finally decided that we would have to pay our friend's bills to help her recover. Over the past few months we have visited her many times while she has undergone major surgery.
While our friend has been laid up my wife and I have tried to go on with our lives, but the emptiness has haunted us. I'm ashamed to say that to fill the void we struck up casual relationships with a couple of other hotties, but it just wasn't the same. Although, I do have to admit that there was a little black haired beauty with... well, you know the words to the song. She's a tough street lady, and we were smitten by her curvaceous, all natural beauty. Who knows, maybe we'll see her again one of these days...

But now our beautiful red head has returned! She's back in all her glory and stronger than ever. My wife and I can't wait to be alone with her! And we want to enjoy her with our friends too. (Woo Hoo!!) We're just happy to celebrate her return. Now we really do know that love hurts! Lately we've been thinking that maybe we should turn our three way into a four way relationship just in case something like this ever happens again. That way we won't have to suffer the guilt and anxiety of bringing strangers into the most intimate part of our lives in the future. We're happy to have our beautiful Screamin' Eagle Road King
® back in all her racy glory! We're thinking maybe we should get a spare bike in case anything like this happens to our gorgeous red head in the future.

Angels at a Rest Stop
From UBSO
3.09.09
My mom and I had driven up from California to live in Oregon. On December 12 2008, we had stopped at a rest stop between Creswell & Cottage grove off the I-5. My mom and I were unsure as to what to do. We had little money, didn't know where to go and the winter blast was coming in.
Around 9 pm I had asked for the powers at be to give us some guidance. That is when we saw the bikers. They were giving out hot coffee from their trailer. We took this as a sign and so approached these people for advice.
There was a tall woman with blond hair,a woman with glasses and short light hair and two burly looking men -- one had a beard. They told us that the storm was coming in and gave us advice to just go towards Portland. They offered prayer for a safe trip.
My mom Sue and I would like to thank those angels and their positive blessing they gave us.They said they had talked to a couple of truckers before us and the truckers said the road was clear up to Portland but the snow was coming in. They were vital in aiding us to have the strength and faith to continue on our journey and to let the powers at be guide us, which they did to the city of Newberg. Ever since then things have been wonderful. We are writing today to thank those kind people as we do not now their names.
Blessings,
Chrystal & Sue

What a great Toy Run!
from Pamela Dunn
12.13.08

I just recently moved over here to the Medford area from Coos Bay. For sometime now, I have been hearing about this group of Women who ride bikes and help out alot with the Community. After making some phone calls and searching the Web, I finally found the Women In The Wind!
Being very excited about just joining this club, I never in a million years dreamed that I would experience what I did yesterday! It was like a dream come true. Something a lot of people only get to see on TV or in the movies. December 6, 2008 was the Rogue Valley Toy Run! Coming from a small area like Coos Bay, the toy runs I have been involved in through out the years, I thought were BIG! The last one I participated in had a total of about 56 motorcycles. To us, that was HUGE! When I was told on the phone that they were expecting around 500-600 motorcycles, I got nervous and a little scared! But on the other hand was looking forward to living out my dream. Not only riding in a large pack of bikes, but to see how many different bikers would show up to help those in need. Boy was I in for a shock of a lifetime!
Getting up and heading out early in the morning to meet at D&S Harley, in 28-degree weather was not what I would call a good start! I had second thoughts about turning around and going back home when we had pulled into a gas station and I no longer had the use of my hands. They were frozen and on the verge of frostbite. But this was something that I didn't want to miss out on and so I just kept on going -- slapping my hands on my legs at every stoplight trying to get the blood flowing back into my fingers. Once we arrived at D&S and I pulled off my gloves to see the dark purple fingers, I headed to the restroom running them under water to warm them up. I kept praying for the weather to warm up a little, so I could continue this major event!
When I walked outside, I couldn't believe it! It was like God had answered my prayers, along with everyone else's, who had shown up just as cold as I was. The sky was blue and the air was warm. On down the road we headed after doughnuts and coffee to warm our hands, to where all the bikers would meet and line up. WOW! There was 100s of bikers. I was very nervous but on the other hand looking forward to being in the parade. Rows and rows of bikes lined up and people from all different clubs waiting to ride the streets to show the community that we care! I rode behind Holly who is one of the Women In The Wind members whom I've come to know, hoping she would make sure I made it through this stampede of bikes...LOL!
Watching the people out on the sides of the streets as we rode through honking and waving, their faces lit up and they hooted and hollered even honking their horns all down the lanes. Children ran up to see where the noisy sounds were coming from and their mouths dropped as we all rode by! I couldn't believe how happy the Community was too see this event! It was nothing like I had ever dreamed. I was just disappointed that it didn't last longer. The Parade was way too short for me...haha!
I can't wait until next year to do this again! I am so proud to be an American where people of all races, religions, and clubs pull together to collect toys to make sure that the kids who deserve a Christmas but families can't afford it, will be able to have one now! I met alot of very nice people at this Toy Run and hope to see them all again next year! This time instead of 638 bikes....I hope to see 1,000! |

Kneed to Ride
by Dennis McCartney

Hi Terrie and the crew at D & S
Last September I had total knee surgery, about 6 weeks into recovery I could ride again and did when the weather permitted till
April when the new knee got infected and had to be removed thus no more riding for awhile.
Six weeks of intervenous antibiotics and NO knee; June 2nd had my second total knee surgery again. I vowed to ride with my friend Roy from Redding to K Falls for the Rip City Riders Rally. July 12 got on Marilyn my trusty Road King® and off I went, back in the saddle again. Ten weeks of polishing Marilyn to a deep shine she was ready to ride.
To my surprise in our community pictures of Rip City Riders the first picture is of me and Roy and Gene shootin' the bs in K Falls.
Thanks for all the support of D&S my knee recovery is going very well and I'm riding again.
Keep up the good work,
Dennis
